SOSU Women roll in home opener

11-20-07 - Six different players scored in double-figures for the Southeastern Oklahoma State women's basketball team (2-1) and the Savage Storm rolled to a 90-59 win in its home opener against Mid-American Christian on Tuesday night at Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium.

Southeastern was led by Kacey Russell who piled on 18 points off the bench to lead all-scorers. Ashley Tucker pitched in 14 points and Jessica Hocker added 12. Destiny Brown and Channing Gann each chipped in 11 points, while Trista Shomo rounded out the SOSU players in double-figures with 10 points.

The Storm owned the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Evangels 59-to-27 on the night, including an impressive 31-to-7 difference on the offensive boards.

Brown led the way for SOSU on the glass, pulling down 14 rebounds to register her second double-double of the season. Andi Richardson chipped in nine b oards and Shomo added six.

Gann dished out eight assists on the night, while Tucker was right behind with five. As a team, SOSU finished with 22 assists in 36 made field goals.

MACU scored the game's first point on a free throw, and held a 3-0 lead 1:32 into the game, but a Gann three pointer knotted the score at 3-3.

The Evangels took another lead at 5-3 with 18:06 to play in the first half, but a Shomo three point bucket gave SOSU a 6-5 lead and they would never trail again.

MACU twice tied the score early in the first half, with the last instance being a 10-10 tie with 15:23 to play, but a quick 10-to-4 run put the Storm up 20-14 with 11:32 to play in the half.

Richardson gave the Storm its first double-digit lead with a jumper at the 7:34 mark to take a 29-19 lead.

MACU would cut the lead to nine-points with 5:56 remaining, but Southeastern would finish the half on a 14-6 run to take a 45-28 lead into the half.

A quick 9-0 run t o open the second half put SOSU up 54-28, and the lead would never drop below 20-points for the rest of the game.

A Russell three pointer with 11:57 to play gave the Storm its biggest lead of the game at 65-34.

The Evangels twice cut the deficit to 23 points, but Russell ended the game with a pair of threes that fashioned the final score of 90-59.

The Storm will play its first men's and women's double-header when both teams host Rogers State on Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
