ECU Women roll over Permian Basin

11-24-07 - East Central University’s Lady Tigers, behind Lacey Goldwire’s double-double, went to a perfect 2-0 on the young season as they posted a 73-43 rout of Texas-Permian Basin Saturday to wrap up play in the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Athletic Association Thanksgiving Classic.

Goldwire was the only ECU player to reach double figures with 24 points as she hit 9-of-18 shots from the floor overall, 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to go along with 10 rebounds, a game-leading five assists and a steal.

Though Goldwire was the only double-digit scorer, all but one Lady Tiger got into the scoring column as Jastin Flenory, Kristie Dodgion, Kacey Thomas and Carly Ballew chipped in eight points apiece and Veronica Valles tacked on six.

ECU shot 41.9 percent from the field and held a whopping 60-26 advantage on the boards. Flenory pulled down eight rebounds and Dodgion snatched seven.

Texas-Permian Basin, which had no double-figure scorers, was also held to 24.6 percent shooting overall as it totaled just 14 field goals. However, TPBU did hit six 3-pointers, but attempted 25 (24 percent).

The Lady Tigers had a 36-25 halftime advantage before more than doubling up TPBU by a 37-18 margin in the second half.

Trailing 10-9, ECU went on a 13-0 run to take a 22-10 lead with 11:07 to go before halftime. A Thomas blocked shot and rebound, followed by a Goldwire layup off a Valles feed keyed the spurt. Goldwire, who had 22 points in the first half, tallied nine during that run to enable the Lady Tigers to take control.

ECU visits Southwestern Christian University in Bethany for a 5:30 p.m. start. The ECU and SCU men follow at 7:30.
