ECU outscores Dallas Baptist 96-88

12-18-07 - Senior guard Terrell Carpenter fired in 23 points and dished out 11 assists for a double-double as the East Central University Tigers rolled to a 96-88 victory over Dallas Baptist University Tuesday afternoon to wrap up play in the ECU Christmas Classic at the Kerr Activities Center.

Carpenter, a 6-0 senior out of Chicago, connected on 5-of-7 shots from the floor, including 3-of-3 from 3-point land, and was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line while delivering over half of the Tigers’ 21 assists on the day.

He was one of five ECU players to reach double figures as sophomore Justin Wilkerson came within one rebound of his third double-double on the year as he tossed in 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting (3-of-4 from 3-point range) to go along with nine boards, eight of which occurred on the defensive end. He also contributed three assists, two steals and a blocked shot for the Tigers, who improved to 5-3 on the season.

Senior reserve Dominique Scales also performed well on the inside for the Tigers, substituting for the foul-troubled Ian Adams. Scales tossed in 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds (four off the offensive glass).

Junior forward Don Riley followed with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists and freshman Lougwin Spann added 10 points and four boards off the bench.

The Tigers, who shot 56.6 percent from the floor for the game, including 63.6 in the second half, had a magnificent flow to their offense as evidenced by the clutch shooting and unselfish onslaught of assists. ECU was 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from 3-point territory.

The only downfall for the Tigers was 17 turnovers. ECU enjoyed a 37-25 rebounding advantage in the contest.

DBU, which fell to 3-5, shot fairly well also, hitting 52.3 percent of its tries, including 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from long range.

Dwight Coleman, on 7-of–11 shooting and 3-of-3 from 3-point land, finished with 18 points and five rebounds before fouling out to pace Patriots, while Eddie Gloviak added 14 points on 6-of-9 field-goal tries. Brandon Wash was next with 10 points.

It was the second time that ECU had beaten DBU this year. The Tigers upended the Patriots 84-64 to open the 2007-08 season on Nov. 20 in Dallas.

ECU, which held a 49-37 halftime advantage, took a 71-58 lead on a Wilkerson trey, off a Carpenter kick-out pass, with 11:27 to go. But DBU crept back in, even pulling within 74-73 with 7:00 remaining.

But a Carpenter 3-pointer and Rodney Bencoma layup, of course off a Carpenter feed, made it 79-73 with 5:33 left.

On three occasions down the stretch, the Tigers built up a 12-point cushion to keep the Patriots at bay. The last 12-point cushion came with :21 remaining when Scales sank the first of two free throws to make it 95-83.

ECU is now idle until Saturday, Dec. 29, when it hosts Tabor College in a noon game at the Kerr Center.
