DURANT, Okla. (Feb. 28, 2005) – Southeastern Oklahoma Interim Director of Athletics Dr. Jeff Hale has announced today that Keith Baxter has resigned as the Savage head football coach, citing personal reasons for his departure. “We are sorry to lose such a good coach and person in Keith Baxter and wish him the best of luck,” commented Hale on Baxter’s resignation. “However, we remain excited about the future of the Savage football program and will do everything in our power to ensure that the success of the program will continue.” Baxter, 42, coached the Savages to a 23-16 record over his four-year stint at the helm of the program after taking over as head football coach December of 2000. He ranks as the seventh-winningest head football coach in school history and just the eighth coach to record 20-or-more victories. Prior to his tenure as head coach, Baxter served as SOSU’s Offensive Coordinator for 12 seasons (1989-2000). In his four seasons as head coach, Baxter coached a total of 43 all-conference performers, including 23 First Team selections. In three of his seasons, the Savages have boasted a candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy, including two-time finalist Drew Beard who finished third in the national voting this past fall. Baxter was named the Lone Star Conference North Division Coach of the Year in 2004. During his 16 years in service to the SOSU coaching staff, the Savage offense has recorded its most productive era. His offenses has eclipsed the 400 yard per game plateau on five occasions, including the past two seasons. Baxter leaves after leading the Savages to three-straight winning seasons including an 8-3 mark last fall along with their first NCAA Division II postseason appearance and first playoff berth since 1988. “We truly appreciate the leadership that Coach Baxter has provided to our student-athletes for the past 16 years,” added SOSU President Dr. Glen D. Johnson. “He has led our football program to new levels of excellence, winning the Lone Star Conference North Division and guiding the team to the NCAA Division II playoffs last season. He is leaving our football program in great shape, and he has been a role model for our student-athletes. The University family wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.” A search for the new head football coach at Southeastern Oklahoma will begin immediately with plans of having the position filled in time for spring drills.
