SOSU Women drop LSC opener, 78-63

1-16-08 - The Southeastern Oklahoma State women's basketball team (9-7 ,0-1 LSC-N) opened Lone Star Conference North Division play with a 78-63 loss at the hands of Northeastern State (8-8, 1-0) on Wednesday night in Tahlequah, Okla.

Despite getting 18 points from Jessica Hocker, the Savage Storm was unable to overcome an NSU team that hit 51.8 percent of its shots in the contest.

Hocker's 18 points did give her enough to pass Tera Newnam to move into third on SOSU's all-time scoring leaders list with a career total of 1,274 points.

Joining Hocker in double figures were Trista Shomo who had 15 points and Channing Gann who chipped in 12.

Destiny Brown led the Storm in rebounds with six, but SOSU was outrebounded 37-to-27 on the night.

SOSU got on the board first with a Shomo three-pointer and held a lead until NSU got a layup to take a 6-5 advantage .

Another Shomo three put the Storm on top 8-6, but eight-straight Riverhawk points gave NSU a 14-8 advantage with 13:45 to play in the half.

Following a Storm bucket, NSU ran off another eight-straight to take a 22-10 lead with 11:16 remaining in the half.

The teams traded shots until SOSU trimmed the deficit to seven points with 3:08 to play, but the Riverhawks finished on a 9-2 run to put the Storm down 40-26 at the half.

NSU opened the second half with a 10-3 run to put SOSU down 50-29 with 17:12 to play, but the Storm answered with a 17-1 run to close the gap to 51-46 with 10:44 remaining.

The Southeastern rally, however, ran out of gas as NSU reeled off a 23-4 run to mount a 74-50 lead with 3:40 to play.

The Storm did not let up down the stretch though, scoring 13 straight points to cut the Riverhawk lead to 74-63 with 1:23 to play, but NSU hit four free throws down the stretch to fashion the final score of 78-63.

Southeastern w ill be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in Weatherford, Okla., against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
