Roos drop conference opener

In a rematch of last year’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship game, Millsaps plated two runs in each of the first two innings and the ’Roos were unable to get their offense going, falling 7-3 in their first conference game of the season to drop them to 6-10 overall this year. The ’Roos were limited to four hits in the game.

In the first inning Jeremy Aliff scored the game’s first run on a passed ball and Derrik Boland laced a double to bring home Hunter Abrams before Kangaroo pitcher Will Chermak was able to work out of a bases loaded situation to keep it to a 2-0 game after one.

Abrams doubled in the second to score two more runs for the Majors, with Russ Boyd and Josh Ordeneaux crossing the plate to make it 4-0 heading into the bottom of the second. The ’Roos got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when John Reisig scored on a throwing error to cut it to a three run deficit.

Chermak seemed to be settling down after the first two innings, retiring nine straight batters until Hunter Owen lined a shot over the fence in left field to give the Majors a 5-1 lead after five innings. Two more runs came home in the sixth with Abrams doubling again to score Ordeneaux crossing the plate, and Abrams scored on a single by Owen to make it 7-1.

Austin College took advantage of an error on a pickoff attempt, when the Majors seemed to have Bobby Schleizer stuck between first and second, but a botched throw allowed Schleizer to reach safely while Andy White came around all the way from second to make it a 7-2 game after eight.

In the bottom of the ninth the ’Roos tried to get something going when Scooter Merritt doubled home Bennett Herrick to make it 7-3, but Millsaps reliever Josh Conlee got White to ground to short to end the game.

Abrams finished the game going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Owen went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, and Ordeneaux went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Travis Bogue went eight innings allowing two unearned runs and striking out seven batters, allowing seven walks and only two hits to earn the win.

Merritt was the lone bright spot offensively for the ’Roos, collecting two of the team’s four hits in three at bats, including his RBI double. Reisig and Herrick each had a hit and a run. Chermak takes the loss for the ’Roos after giving up seven runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work, striking out seven batters while walking none. Mason Anders was strong in relief, going 3.1 shutout innings and striking out five batters.

Austin College and Millsaps square off again tomorrow for a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Baker Field.
