8-2-05 - Former Dallas Cowboy star Deion Sanders says he was tested weekly for steroids after he ended his three-year retirement a year ago and rejoined the Baltimore Ravens.
The reason -- there were steroids in his system when he took his Ravens' physical.
In this case, the steroids were legal and medically sanctioned.
At camp today, after someone asked Sanders if he believed Oriole Rafael Palmeiro might have accidentally taken steroids, Sanders revealed his experience in his return to the game.
He said that shortly before he decided to end his retirement, he received medical treatment for an ankle injury he had sustained playing basketball. A steroid was part of that -- not at all an unusual treatment.
Because the treatment was administered before he rejoined the NFL and was confirmed by his doctor, Sanders was not disciplined by the league.
