6-07-08 -- It’s not quite fall football, but at least it satisfies the pigskin craving. Until August rolls around, some high schools form a team of about 20 players to compete in 7-on-7 games.
This week the Sherman Bearcats played in the SMU Qualifier against several 5A and 4A teams. While there are numerous qualifiers throughout the summer, each team can only play in two. The top two teams from each qualifier get a trip to College Station for the 7-On-7 State Championship in mid-July.
Sherman has made that trip several times in the past few years. While they haven’t qualified yet, the Bearcats are certainly beating some tough competition.
Saturday they beat Allen, South Garland and Hebron JV to earn a spot in the championship bracket of four, played inside Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Sherman was the only 4A school to make it out of pool play.
They took on Plano in a high scoring game, but lost 41-26. They have their second and final chance at a bid for State in two weeks at the Mesquite tournament. The Bearcats also play in other 7-on-7 leagues every Friday.
