A | A | A

The Denison Yellow Jackets enter the 2008 season as the district favorites in 9-4A. Today they began a season long journey in which they hope to live up to those lofty expectations. Denison took the field for the first time this afternoon, but were quickly force indoors when lightning strikes neared campus.

Cody White enters his second season with Denison. His Jackets finished 2007 by erasing a 19 point deficit to beat Sherman in the Battle of the Axe.

Meanwhile, in Sherman, the Bearcats are also picked to have a strong team. Some are picking them as high as 2nd in the pre-season, with others picking them to finish 3rd.

Sherman Coach Drew Young found out that he will not have a quarterback competition afterall. An injury has forced Garrett Powell off of the offensive unit, while Madison Carter will take over behind center.

The Bearcats practiced earlier in the day, so the stormy weather didn't have the same impact on their first workout as it did in Denison.

Sherman and Denison both missed the playoffs in 2007. They both open regular season play on August 29th.

No Cay Fan, it is no just one mistake, is the ATTITUD that a couple of players (like the one mentioned before) display/have toward the team, the coach and the school. Those players act like they are the one running the show with complete disregard and any respect toward the coach and others. And come on...it shows!

RC you can't just call one player out like that. Just because you say "an example" doesn't make it right. You're acting like his one mistake ruined the whole season. And i believe that his punishment was just. He missed a major game.

Josh, it wasn't just the defense not being able to stop one play. It has a lot to do with your coach or coaches keep running the same play over and over on offense, in the last quarter and every time they ran the play it went nowhere. You'd of thought they would have tried something different instead of just giving Denison the ball back after every four downs. I do agree that young didn't say anything about predicting a loss just saying they have a tough competitor. --- I sure was wanting to see who young would have picked for QB if Powell wasn't injured.

I will just ask this question - Who would you rather have as a HC - Drew Young or Cody White? I go with White quickly...

I must say, that I was extremely disappointed on how some players of the Sherman Bearcat behaved last year. An example: the RB Waymon James missed two key practices during the 2007-2008 season. (I’m sure everyone knows the “reasons.”) Because of that, unjustified absent, coach Young opted for a one-day suspension for Waymon; you got to be kidding me - I do not believe the RB got the punishment he deserved. Waymon attitude (and a couple of other players) toward the coach, the team, and the school, was inappropriate. These young players need to learn about discipline, accountability, and above all, responsibility. That is the key to a great 2008-2009-football season.

What the heck does saying they can possibly sneak up on someone have to do w/ predicting a loss? Maybe you need to go listen again and/or have your hearing checked. Rockwall-Heath is a good football team and will be tough to beat on the road. There's nothing wrong w/ giving a team its props. I never heard the word lose in Coach Young's statement. There wasn't any kind of prediction for a loss. Just someone trying to stir things up. And as far as nothing being the same, wasn't it not too long ago when Sherman went to the state semifinals? Who was their head coach then? Oh yeah, it was Drew Young! The guy coached through a heart attack trying to help lead this team to a win. Everyone wants to focus on the loss to Denison last year. I give their young quarterback credit for having a lot of heart, and the blame goes above and beyond the head coach. Yeah, he's the one you look to in the end, but all the defense needed was one stop, and it didn't have enough in the tank to do so. Quit hating

I agree, Greg. We need another John Outlaw desperately!!!! Things just haven't been the same since he was chased out of town after the '94-'95 season. GOOO BEARCATS!!

I love the fact that SHS HC Young is already predicting a loss to Rockwall-Heath - wow - what a leader! SHS needs to get back to dominate football...you will never do that predicting losses before the season begins.
