AXE-MANIA! Sherman hosts Denison in 110th Battle of the Axe

By  |

SHERMAN, Tex. ― The undefeated Denison Yellow Jackets. The one-loss Sherman Bearcats. They blew through the competition of District 9-4A unscathed, leaving one game in early November to decide the district championship. But ask anybody in Grayson County, and they’ll tell you it’s about much more than that.

The annual Sherman/Denison game is the longest continuous rivalry among all high schools in the state of Texas, according to Sherman ISD’s website, which has some excellent info on the history of the rivalry.

‘The Axe,’ originated from Denison businessman Jack Barker. Barker owned a small ice cream parlor on Main Street across from the old Denison High School. Barker wanted to create a symbol of sportsmanship and excellence in the competition between the schools. Thus, the axe was born, and was first awarded to the winner in 1949 (Sherman won, 13-7). The scores and years are engraved on the blade. When both sides of the blade are filled, the school with the most victories will keep the original Axe.

We had a discussion in the newsroom the other day in which one person asked which mattered more to the people of Texoma: the election or the Battle of the Axe? We had our own guesses, but let’s settle it now! Vote on the web poll on this page and check out the results as they come in.

Well, when have you ever seen people both selling and looking for tickets to a high school football game online?

How about putting together a video tribute to the game?
