A&M Commerce Women beat TWU

Britney Jordan neared triple-double numbers and Nola Taylor recorded her sixth double-double of the season as the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions cruised to a 99-75 victory over Texas Woman’s on Wednesday night at the A&M-Commerce Field House.

“Tonight, I think our team had fun playing hard,” said Jordan. “Every time we come out and play like this I think the results will always be good.”

A&M-Commerce improves to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference North action, while TWU slides to 10-6 and 1-2.

A 16-3 spurt out of the gates, including 10 points from Jordan, helped the Lions roll to a 52-36 advantage at the intermission. A&M-Commerce never trailed in the half and built its lead to as much as 22 at the 6:09 mark after a 3 from Genevieve Campbell.

Jordan, who averages 30.4 points per game, paced the Lions in the first with 26 points.

Texas Woman’s, without its top scorer and rebounder, responded with an 11-0 run to open the second to pull within five, but free throws from A&M-Commerce’s Desiree Waller halted the run and sparked the Lions on a 19-4 spurt.

The Lions extended their lead to 27 points, the largest of the game, after a layup from Waller with 3:29 remaining.

“When we come out and have fun, we end up with a victory and a smile on out face,” said Taylor, who finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds. “We had a great night tonight.”

Jordan’s night ended with 39 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four steals. It was her ninth game of the season with at least 30 points. Campbell finished with 20 points and connected on four 3-pointers in the second half to help push the Lions’ lead back to double digits. Waller added 14 points and six rebounds.

Renee Renz, who ranks No. 8 in Division II with 22.9 points and averages a double-double, missed the game for TWU. The Pioneers shot just 37.0 percent from the floor and were outscored in the paint and outrebounded by the Lions without their senior post.

Jessica Hanna paced Texas Woman’s with 19 points, and Brittany Foster collected a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Jessica Bell totaled 13 points and nine rebounds, and Casey Pool poured in 11.

A&M-Commerce will look to extend its winning streak to three games when they visit Cameron on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lawton, Okla.
