ECU Men and Women split against NSU

TAHLEQUAH - The ECU Men upend Northeastern State, 65-57 while the Lady Tigers fall to the Riverhawks 76-45 at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse on the campus of Northeastern State in Tahlequah.

Sophomore Dontae Figgs scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while two other East Central University players also reached double figures as the Tigers secured their first Lone Star Conference North victory with a 65-57 decision over Northeastern State Saturday at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse.

Joining Figgs in double digits was senior center Ian Adams, who finished with 13 and also pulled down five rebounds and blocked four shots. Rodney Bencoma, playing in only his second game this season, added 12 points, including two 3-pointers, with three assists and a pair of steals as ECU improved to 6-13 overall and 1-2 in the LSC North.

The Tigers shot 43.1 percent overall while attempting only eight 3-point shots and converting three. ECU also dominated the boards by a whopping 53-33 margin.

Junior Justin Wilkerson led the Tigers’ rebounding domination with 13 as he also finished with eight points with one block and a steal. Senior guard Tyler Thetford contributed seven points, five boards, four assists and two steals to the ECU cause.

Meanwhile, NSU was held to 32.4 percent shooting with most of its 68 attempts from 3-point range. The RiverHawks, who fell to 7-12 and 2-2, were 12-of-47 (25.5 percent) from long range.

Ben Rovenstine led NSU with 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting from 3-point territory. He also handed out six assists. Jason Jones and Marlon Burnett followed with 10 points apiece. In fact, Jones finished with a double-double as he also pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Tigers held a slim 52-51 advantage, before outscoring the RiverHawks 13-6 in the final 5:24 as Figgs’ tip-in started the spurt down the stretch for ECU.

NSU was held scoreless in the final 2:43 as the Tigers wrapped up the game with a 5-0 run on two free throws by Wilkerson, a layup by Bencoma and a free shot by Adams.

ECU returns home Wednesday to host Texas A&M-Commerce for LSC North play at 8 p.m. on Wayne Cobb Court inside the Kerr Center.

ECU Women lose to 76-45

Behind 65.5 percent first-half shooting and six 3-pointers, host Northeastern State cruised to a 46-18 halftime lead and posted a 76-45 decision over the East Central University Lady Tigers Saturday in Lone Star Conference North women’s basketball play at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse.

The RiverHawks finished at 56.4 percent shooting for the game in improving to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the LSC North while ECU dropped to 7-11 and 1-3.

The Lady Tigers shot just 34 percent, were out-rebounded by a 36-24 margin and committed 21 turnovers.

Senior Kacey Thomas was ECU’s only double-figure scorer with 10 points, but was only 4-of-14 from the floor with five rebounds and four steals.

Junior Angela Kalanoska hit 3-of-6 shots from 3-point range and finished with nine points. Danielle Cox and Kelcie Nunley followed with six and five, respectively.

Jasmine Webb paced NSU with 16 points on an 8-of-12 effort from the field. Jessica White followed with 11 points for the winners and Sarah Millar tacked on nine.

The Lady Tigers’ only lead came 16 seconds into the contest on a Kalanoska trey. The RiverHawks then scored nine straight points to kick-start a 25-2 run and take control of the contest.

ECU will try to stop a two-game losing slide on Wednesday as it hosts Texas A&M-Commerce for LSC North action at 6 p.m. on Wayne Cobb Court inside the Kerr Activities Center.
