The Austin College baseball team dropped both ends of their doubleheader with No. 2-ranked Millsaps on Sunday afternoon, coming back to force extra innings before dropping game one 9-5 and then falling 12-3 in game two. The ’Roos are now 8-16 on the year and 3-12 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
In game one it was the Tony Malaschak show early on for the Majors, with Malaschak blasting a pair of home runs in his first two at bats. Malaschak’s first was a two run shot in the top of the second and the second round tripper was a three run blast that made it 5-0 after four innings.
That remained the score until the bottom of the sixth when the ’Roos rallied all the way back, including scoring three runs with two outs to tie things at 5. Lee Cohen doubled home Jordan Robison to get things started and came home on a double by Patrick Ray, and Ray, Sean Muder and Scooter Merritt all crossed the plate in the inning.
After neither team was able to score in the seventh, the Majors wasted little time in getting on the board in the first extra frame. Billy Murphy scored on a wild pitch to give the Majors a one run lead, and Malaschak and Tait Hendrix knocked consecutive singles with Malaschak scoring on the base hit by Hendrix. Russ Boyd gave the Majors two more insurance runs when he followed up a Jeremy Aliff single with a long home run to make it a 9-5 game, and the ’Roos were unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning.
Tyler Steed gave up six runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in 7.0 innings of work to take the loss, while Drew Maddox tossed 2.1 innings in relief to earn the win for Millsaps. Malaschak went 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Muder and John Reisig each had two hits to lead Austin College.
In game two the Majors took advantage of three hit batters in the opening frame to put five runs on the board, and after Austin College answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Merritt scored on a single by Schleizer, Millsaps answered back with three runs over the next two innings to make it 8-1 after three.
The lead grew to 10-1 in the top of the fifth before Austin College got two runs back when Schleizer doubled to score George Scheible and then came home on a double by David Riddle to make it 10-3. That’s as close as the ’Roos would get though as the Majors added two more runs in the sixth to make it a 12-3 final.
Will Chermak gave up eight runs, six of which were earned, on six hits while walking four, hitting four batters and striking out four in 2.1 innings of work to take the loss for Austin College, and Maddox picked up his second win of the day by throwing 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Aliff went 3-for-4 with four runs scored to lead Millsaps and Schleizer finished 3-for-3 with two RBI to pace the ’Roos offensively.
