The University of Texas-Dallas had their offense clicking all day and the Austin College baseball team was unable to match the production by the Comets as the ’Roos fell in both halves of their doubleheader on Tuesday at Baker Field. The ’Roos fell 14-6 in game one and 13-1 in game two to drop to 8-18 on the year.
The ’Roos jumped ahead early in game one when Patrick Ray doubled to right center, scoring Lee Cohen and giving the ’Roos a 1-0 lead after two innings. The lead wouldn’t last long though as the Comets answered back with three runs in the top of the third, highlighted a two run homer from Jared Smith to make it 3-1.
UTD plated three more runs in the fourth with Smith and Cody Ross each hitting RBI doubles, and one more run came home in the fifth on a Ross single to make it a 7-1 game. Austin College added a run in the bottom half of the inning on a Lee Cohen single through the middle to cut it to a five run game, but the Comets opened things up with a big five run sixth inning. Jacob Starnes belted a two run triple in the inning as the Comets took a 12-2 lead.
The ’Roos tried to chip away with Matt Finke and John Reisig each singling home runs in the sixth, but two more runs for the Comets in the top of the seventh pushed the lead back to 10 at 14-4. Austin College would get two more runs in the seventh on a solo homer from Bobby Schleizer and an RBI base hit from Scooter Merritt, but that would be as close as they’d get in the 14-6 loss.
Schleizer took the loss for Austin College, giving up six runs in 3.1 innings of work. Merritt finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Reisig and Cohen each had two hits and a run batted in for the ’Roos. Ross led the Comets with a 3-for-4 performance and four runs batted in.
In the second game the Comets struck first with a three run second inning with Brad Price ripping a two run double followed by another double from Starnes to plate Price and make it 3-0 after an inning and a half. That remained the score until the top of the fourth, when a Chad Hudson grand slam capped off a huge inning for UTD as the Comets plated nine to make it a 12-0 game. The Comets added another run in the fifth when Smith scored on a wild pitch to make it a 13 run game.
Austin College would finally get on the board in the bottom of the seventh when George Scheible singled, stole second and third and then came home on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Chase Muder to make it a 13-1 final.
Merritt, Scheible, DJ Hardy and Bennett Herrick collected a hit apiece for the ’Roos while Matt Finke absorbed the loss after surrendering 12 runs, four earned, on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. Finke also struck out five batters. Brad Price went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Comets, while Max Willard picked up the win by striking out six batters and allowing two hits and no runs in 5.0 innings.
