ABILENE, Texas – Southeastern softball had more regional honors roll in on Thursday as Marjorie Johnson was named NFCA First Team All-South Central Region at pitcher, while Bailey Mathes and Erika Bernal tallied second team honors at short stop and in the outfield, respectively.
Johnson, a native of Tulsa, Okla., earned her first team selection after surpassing her school and conference record strikeout total and currently sits at 415 on the year. She has also lowered her ERA to a 0.80 and has posted a 26-5 record. Opposing hitters are batting just .063 against her and she has tallied eight shutouts and six saves.
Mathes, a native of Ardmore, Okla., was second team all-region short stop after posting a .421 average at the plate to go with a .487 on-base percentage and an impressive .761 slugging percentage. She co-leads the team in home runs with 17 and is one homer away from tying Southeastern’s career record in longballs.
She has driven in 68 runs on the season and has scored 44. Her 16 doubles is second on the team, but is sixth on SE’s all-time list, marking her second season on the doubles list after 18 in 2007 which was a school record at the time.
Bernal, a native of Arlington, Texas, earned the honor in the outfield after earning Lone Star Conference North Division Newcomer of the Year honors. She is hitting .333 on the season and has tallied a .387 on-base percentage and is slugging .587.
She has 14 home runs on the year and has driven in 47, while scoring a team-high 49 runs. She was the first to break the 200 at-bat mark on the season and has 201 heading into the super regional, which is 10th most in SE softball history.
Southeastern will now face off against Angelo State in the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional on May 15-16 with the winner advancing to the National Tournament Finals in Salem, Va.
