NCTC softball loses at NJCAA National Championship

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Fourth-seed Blinn College pinch-hitter Valarie Colunga drilled a two-out single down the left field line to drive in the winning run to give the Buccaneers a thrilling 5-4 victory over #13-seed North Central Texas College in the opening game of the 2009 NJCAA National Championship tournanment Thursday at the Canyons Complex.

Blinn will advance to play #5 Florida CC-Jacksonville in the championship bracket quarterfinal Thursday at 8 p.m. (MDT), while NCTC will play #12 Southeastern CC in an elimination game at 6 p.m. (MDT).

NCTC took a 4-2 lead thanks to a three-run sixth inning, however BC rallied for two runs in its half of the frame to tie the score at 4-4. Blinn reliever Lindsey Brown pitched a scoreless seventh, which set the stage for Colunga's heriocs in the seventh.

Caley Jeter had two hits and three RBI to lead Blinn, while Amanda Mayfield and Whitney Harris each had three hits to pace NCTC's offense.
