SOSU softball drops heartbreaker in Super-Regional opener

Despite holding Angelo State to just one hit, Southeastern came out on the losing end of a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in game one of the South Central Super Regional on Friday afternoon in San Angelo, Texas.

Game two of the series is slated for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, and if the Savage Storm can even the series a third and deciding game will be played following that contest.

Marjorie Johnson was handed the loss, falling to 26-6 on the season, despite striking out 10 and allowing just one hit.

Benita Sanchez reached base safely on all three trips, drawing a walk to lead off the game and connecting on two of SE’s three hits. Bailey Mathes collected the other.

The game was decided in the bottom of the sixth when RamBelle pinch-runner Nicole Wellman stole home with two outs and two strikes.

Mathes doubled off the right field wall to lead off the next inning, just missing a game tying home run. She would advance to third on an Erika Bernal sac bunt, but the Storm were unable to push her across the plate.

It was the fourth-straight one-run game with SE winning the first and the Belles winning the last three.

Sarah DeMoss tallied ASU’s only hit, legging out an infield single, while Wellman tallied the game’s lone run.

Chelsea Nelson moved to 29-4 on the year after allowing three hits and striking out seven.
