Indians lose a heartbreaker

3-8-07 -- It looked like they had done the impossible.

The Plainview High School boys basketball team, with only 1 other state tournament appearance to their credit, took on one of the most storied basketball programs in the state, the Millwood Falcons, Thursday night in their quarter-final matchup at Choctaw High School.

The two evenly matched teams battled for nearly all of 48 minutes until Plainview comitted a foul with 1.4 seconds to go. That set up a crucial 1 and 1 for the Falcons. They missed the first foul shot but ended up tipping in the ball as the final buzzer sounded to beat Plainview, 56-55.

Other boys action from Thursday in Oklahoma City found Coalgate facing off with Pawnee at Southern Nazerene University in the 2A state-quarterfinal matchup.

This one was an uphill battle all game for the Wildcats, and in the end the Bears were just too strong, ending Coalgate's run this year with a 71-63 loss.

The Coalgate girls, however, fared much better. Jim Jenson's squad, for the 2nd year in a row, has punched its ticket to the state semi-finals. The Lady Wildcats defeated Oklahoma Bible in a defensive struggle, 34-30 at Midwest City High School.

The girls will take on perennial power Washington, Friday at 2:00 at Southern Nazerene University.
