3-23-07 - Southeastern Oklahoma State's Eric Babers scored the first basket for the West All Stars Friday night at the NABC/NCAA Division II All Star Game.
Babers finished with a respectable night with six points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks as the West stormed back from a 16-point second-half deficit to take a 97-92 decision over the East.
Humboldt (Calif.) State's Kevin Johnson was named the West's Most Outstanding Player after finishing with 18 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while Philadephia's Christian Burns was East's MOP amassing 18 points and 11 boards.
Johnson was instrumental in a 19-3 second-half run by the West after Alabama-Huntsville's Jason Smith canned a 3-pointer at the 14:35-mark to give the East a 74-58 lead.
Johnson followed Steven Wright's missed layup with a dunk to start the run.
Chaminade's Zack Whiting assisted two of the next three baskets with a Wright steal and 3-pointer sandwiched in between.
Babers took a Dusty Jura assist and layed in his third bucket of the night as he was fouled on the way to the basket, but missed the free throw as the West trimed the lead to 76-69 with 10:48 to go.
Minutes later, Johnson buried a 3 and dunked on a Damien Lolar (West Texas A&M) assist to narrow the margin to 78-76.
The West would finally take the lead on a Dusty Jura lay-in at the 7:24 mark to go ahead 80-79.
The teams traded two ties and three lead changes the rest of the way, but the West was able to put the game away in the final minute by converting 7-of-10 free throws.
Lolar led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including a 3-of-10 effort from beyond the arc. He added four rebounds and two assists.
Babers opened the game with a steal, then dropped in a layup off of a Whiting assist at the 18:56 mark of the opening half.
