ECU Swept by Northeastern

4-4-07 - East Central University’s Josh Walker hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome two unearned Northeastern State runs in the fifth as the Redmen held off the Tigers 2-1 Wednesday to complete a Lone Star Conference North baseball doubleheader sweep at Rousey Field.
NSU collected 10 hits and limited ECU to four in taking an 11-2 decision in the opener of the twinbill.
The Tigers dipped to 7-31 overall and 1-6 in the LSC North with the losses while the Redmen improved to 19-15 and 5-2.

Northeastern State 2, ECU 1 (Game 2)
Tiger right-hander Dave Barnhart (1-5) was the hard-luck loser as he allowed just three hits and walked only three in five-plus innings of work.
Derrick Romines pitched one inning, allowing one hit and striking out two in relief for ECU>
The Redmen took a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
The Tigers cut the deficit in half in the sixth when Tyler Pybas singled and ultimately scored off Walker’s double to right field.
Pybas went 3-for-3 from the plate with the scored run, while Walker was 1-for-3. Jason Wellington also went 1-for-3 to wrap up the ECU hit total of five.
David Curlee (2-2) got the win for NSU as he gave up the one earned run off five hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Brian Musgrove’s RBI off a fielder’s choice and Scott Sittel’s run-scoring single accounted for the Redmen’s two runs in the fifth.

Northeastern State 11, ECU 2 (Game 1)
The Redmen jumped on the Tigers for a pair of runs in the first inning and five more in the second to take control.
Walker’s RBI double brought home one run in the fifth as Pybas and Jared Owen, who each reached on an error, scored in the inning.
Brad Staggs (0-2) was charged with the loss after throwing five innings and allowing all 11 runs (10 earned) off 10 hits with five walks.
Jacob Lago (2-3) picked up the win for NSU as he gave up the two runs, but both were unearned. He also allowed four hits, walked two and struck out three.
Nash Garcia went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the second for the Redmen while Justin Delay was 2-for-3 with a grand slam in the fifth inning.
ECU’s only other hits came on a single each from Pybas, Scott Nevland and Riley Mann.
The Tigers return to action Friday as they host Southeastern Oklahoma State in a 2 p.m. nine-inning single game at Tiger Field. ECU and SOSU will then do battle again Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Tiger Field.
