5-3-07 - Rodney Wecker has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Austin College, Vice President of Student Affairs and Athletics Tim Millerick announced today.
Wecker comes to Austin College from Whitworth College, where he served as an assistant coach from 1991-2004, and associate head coach from 2005 through this past season. During his time at Whitworth, Wecker helped guide the team to a 280-146 record and 12 post-season appearances, including four national tournaments. The team also won five conference titles during Wecker’s time there. In 2003, Wecker was named the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year.
“After conducting what has been the most competitive search in terms of both quantity and quality during my time at Austin College, I am pleased to introduce Rodney Wecker as the new head coach of the Kangaroo men’s basketball program,” said Millerick. “While there is much to consider when making such appointments, the most impressive thing Rodney possesses is a keen sense of basketball and a fine ability to teach the game. Throughout the process there was a growing belief that he will bring solid game coaching to our program.”
Wecker is a 1989 graduate of Metropolitan State College of Denver, and received his master’s degree in teaching from Whitworth in 1995. Wecker was a two year player at Metropolitan State, and upon graduating became an assistant coach. During Wecker’s time at Metropolitan State, the team amassed a 71-20 record.
In addition to his coaching success, Wecker has also has led and worked at several basketball camps, including serving as the owner and director of the Rodney Wecker Shooting Camp since 1991, as well as being the site director of the Greenwood Athletic Club Basketball Fundamentals Camp in Denver from 1991-2004. Wecker also has served as an administrative assistant at the NCAA “Yes” Clinic.
Wecker also brings teaching experience to Austin College, having taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses in kinesiology foundation at Whitworth. Additionally, Wecker has served as a facility manager in the athletics departments of both Metropolitan State and Whitworth and served as an integral part of athletics fundraising efforts at Whitworth.
“Rodney’s passion for and direct experience with NCAA Division III athletics will be a tremendous addition to our coaching staff,” said Millerick. “He has a record of success with recruiting in the Northwest region and I believe that over time he will do the same here in the Southwest region. His teaching capabilities and experiences in other areas of the position will be an asset as well.”
Along with serving as Head Coach at Austin College, Wecker also will be the coordinator of athletic facilities and be directly responsible for the management of the Robert T. Mason Athletic-Recreation Complex.
“Over the years there have been many schools that sought Rodney out, but I am glad we have been able to get him to come to Austin College and lead our men’s basketball program at this time,” said Millerick.
