8-1-07 - Cherrie Wilmoth has been named Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
The announcement was made today by Interim University President Jesse Snowden, who also said that SOSU will begin a search this fall for a permanent athletic director.
Wilmoth currently serves SOSU as its senior woman's administrator, director of compliance and academic eligibility, and volleyball coach. Her coaching duties will be assumed on an interim basis by Wesley "Skip''' Freeman.
"Cherrie has demonstrated her ability in a number of roles within the athletic department,'' Snowden said. "We are fortunate to have someone on staff with her background and knowledge of the overall athletic program and of the University.''
This year marks Wilmoth's 14th year of association with Southeast ern, beginning as a student in a 1993. Before enrolling at Southeastern as an undergraduate, Wilmoth was a standout basketball player at Idabel High School.
Wilmoth earned a bachelor's degree in 1995 and a master's degree in 1996, then spent a year coaching basketball, volleyball and track in Denison, Texas, before returning to reestablish the 17-year dormant volleyball program at her alma mater. In 2001, Wilmoth was named Lone Star Conference North Division Coach of the Year. She coached volleyball for the past nine years.
Interim volleyball coach Wesley "Skip" Freeman was a member of the volleyball team at Pepperdine University in 1995-97. He is currently assistant coach for Women's USA Sitting Volleyball Team, Director of Coaching for the Oklahoma Charge Club Volleyball Team, and Oklahoma Region High Performance Volleyball Coach.
Following the recent resignation of Dr. Jeff Hale, Vice President for Enrollment Management & Marketing & Intercolle giate Athletics, Snowden outlined other organizational changes, which include the creation of three new positions utilizing existing personnel:
The position of Dean of Enrollment Management & Marketing will be assumed by Kyle Stafford, who has served as Director of Admissions since 2002. This area will include enrollment management, marketing, and the GEAR UP grant program. Stafford holds bachelor's and master's degrees from SOSU. The dean will report to the Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Douglas McMillan.
Tim Boatmun is the new Associate Dean of Academic Services, a division that oversees the Academic Advising & Outreach Center, the Learning Center, Freshman Programs, and Honors Program. Boatmun is currently the director of the Academic Advising & Outreach Center. Boatmun graduated from SOSU in 1988 with a double major in psychology and sociology and a minor in music. He then moved to New York City where he earned a M.A. from New York University in 1990. After graduate school, he worked in the field of child abuse prevention for 10 years before returning home to SOSU in 2000.
Serving as the Associate Dean of Admissions & Registrar will be Kristie Luke. This position will oversee the operation of the Registrar's Office and Admissions. Luke is currently the registrar at Southeastern, a position she has held since 1999. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting and business at SOSU.
"We looked at a number of models and options in developing this re-structuring plan before reaching a final decision,'' Snowden said. "It is important to note that while we are creating new positions, we are not adding personnel. Vice President Hale's duties have now been distributed to existing personnel, and we will not replace that vice president position.''
Added Snowden: "We have a great deal of confidence in the individuals we have placed in these new roles. Their areas of responsi bility are obviously very critical to the overall success of the University.''
