– The East Central University baseball team dropped two Great American Conference games to Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Tigers (8-29, 2-21 GAC) first dropped a 6-9 decision in nine innings and then a 3-8 mark in the seven-inning game.
ECU was led by junior Chris Lane and Brede Kochi. Lane tallied a .667 average with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Kochi added a .600 average, three hits and one run scored.
The Tigers will return home for the final two weeks of the regular season, starting with a league series with Northwestern Oklahoma State, April 19-20. The weekend is Alumni Weekend for the baseball team and will feature free dinners after each day’s games. Friday, April 19 will be Fajita Night and Saturday, April 20 will feature a Crawfish Broil.
Game 1 – Southwestern 9, ECU 6
The Bulldogs (24-12, 16-7 GAC) took an early 0-4 advantage scoring three runs in the second and a single run in the fourth.
The Tigers cut the disadvantage in half with a two-run fifth inning. Junior Kyle Watase started the inning with a double and advanced to third because of a throwing error. Senior Justin Sutherland sent the run home with a ground out to second. Junior Brede Kochi then singled to left field and was advanced to third when freshman Brandon Maggia ground out the third. The final run was scored when sophomore Eric Swann singled up the middle.
ECU then took the lead after a four-run sixth inning. Senior Justin Gibson started the inning with a single to third and was joined on base when senior Paul Guardado was hit by a pitch. The first run scored when junior Jake Caton reached on an error. Senior Mac Grace was then hit by a pitch and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Watase.
Sutherland reached with a single to right center to score a run and a third was scored when the Bulldogs pitcher balked. Maggia drew a walk and the final run crossed the plate with a single to right field by Swann.
However, Southwestern was not done scoring and added a run in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth for the 6-9 win.
Game 2 – Southwestern 8, ECU 3
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead after the second inning. Senior Benny Woodard started the inning by reaching on an error and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Andrew Olson and Swann who ground out to second. Woodard scored when junior Chris Lane singled to center field.
The Bulldogs added a run in the third and four in the fourth for a 1-5 advantage.
ECU added a run in the fifth after both Grace and Watase doubled.
The Tigers added another run in the top of the sixth for a 3-5 score. Lane and Kochi singled to center field and runners ended up on first and third when Gibson hit a fielder’s choice. The run scored when Lane stole home while Gibson was trying to steal second.
Southwestern added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 3-8 final.
