Baseball Welcomes SAU To Town

Southeastern will be looking to make a statement in the Great American Conference this weekend as it hosts league-leading No. 17 Southern Arkansas in a three-game series on March 29-30 at The Ballpark in Durant.

The schedule was adjusted slightly from the beginning of the season in anticipation of potential rain in the Durant are and will now feature a 1 p.m. double-header on Friday and a 1 p.m. single game on Saturday.

The Savage Storm enter the weekend at 16-11 overall on the season and 9-6 in GAC play, but have not faced a conference opponent since March 16 and has not played a game at all since March 20 at Oklahoma State.

SAU comes to town with a 23-10 record overall and a 14-4 mark in league play.

Despite the fact that Southeastern tied for fourth in the standings, a sweep of the Muleriders would knot the two teams based on winning percentage.

Southeastern comes into the weekend second in the conference in team pitching with a staff ERA of 3.82, just ahead of SAU's 4.11.

Vance Woodruff paces the SE pitching staff to the tune of a 2.54 ERA, but has seen his team struggle to give him run support and has a 2-5 record which includes the loss against OSU.

Brandon Marris and David Cagle have posted the most starts beyond Woodruff and both boast ERA's under four.

Cagle is at 3.43 on the season with a 2-0 record in six starts and eight appearances, while Marris is at 1-3 on the season with an ERA of 3.56 in seven starts and 10 appearances.

Cameron Mann leads the relievers with a 2.76 ERA in a team-high 14 appearances. He leads the team and its third in the GAC in saves at seven while also posting a 3-0 record.

Eddie Cervantes leads the team with four wins and is 4-1 on the year with a 3.56 ERA in 10 appearances which includes a pair of starts.

Cervantes, Levi Lewis and Mann have at least 10 appearances each with just two starts and have combined for 10 wins in relief.

SE is ninth in the league in hitting at .277, while the Muleriders lead the league with a .329 average.

However, the Storm have picked up the pace over the last 16 games with a .318 average and an 11-5 record dating back to Feb. 26 in a sweep of Tarleton State and has outhit its opponents in 11 of those games.

Evan Ramsey has been a big part of that resurgence on offense as he has climbed to the team lead with a .360 average and is tied for the top spot in the conference in homers with six. He is tied for fifth in the GAC in RBI with 25 and is slugging .663 with an OPS of 1.113.

Five others have pushed their averages back above .300, with Tucker Alexander, Chevis Springer, Ryan Salter, Troy McCartney and Nick Grimmett all batting at .306 or better.

All five also boast double-digit RBI totals, while Salter leads the conference in stolen bases with 21.

SAU has four players ranked in the league's top 10 in hitting, led by Jason Dahl who is batting .426 with 14 doubles, two homers and 25 RBI.

David Harris, William Townsend and Chris Quinn each post averages of .378 or better.

Phillip Menou leads the Mulerider pitching staff with a 6-1 record and a 2.58 ERA in eight starts.

Justin Thomas paces the SAU relievers with a 1.96 ERA and 10 saves in 13 appearances and 18.1 innings pitched.
