Burks Hired as Southeastern Defensive Coordinator

Southeastern head football coach Bo Atterberry has announced the hiring of Charles Burks to serve as the Savage Storm's defensive coordinator.

Burks makes the move after spending the 2013 season as an assistant coach at Texas A&M-Commerce.

"I couldn't be in a better position." Said Burks, "For my first time as a defensive coordinator, than working under a great former DC in coach Atterberry. Being the youngest coordinator in the conference, working with Bo [Atterberry] is a plus because Bo is regarded as one of the best defensive minds in Division II."

"We are excited here at Southeastern about adding coach Burks to the staff," said Aterberry of the hire, "Charlie played and also has been coaching at this level and is a well-respected recruiter in the area. He has been part of winning seasons at every stop he has made."

Burks is entering his first coordinator position, and as the secondary coach for TAMUC last season he helped the team post a 7-5 record and the first winning season for the Lions since 2001, including the team's first bowl trip since the 1950's.

He coached a pair of all-conference honorees in the secondary in 2013.

Burks coached the 2012 season at West Texas A&M where he served as the cornerbacks coach for a defense that led the Lone Star Conference in defensive passing efficiency and advanced to the NCAA National Semi-Finals after winning the conference championship.

He started his coaching career as the secondary coach for East Central, joining the staff of his alma mater in December of 2010 and coaching the 2011 season on a defensive staff that led the conference in pass efficiency defense, yards allowed per completion and opponent's completion percentage. While there he also coached ECU's first first team All-American in 27 years in Dontea Smith.

Burks also completed a internship with the Detroit Lions during the summer of 2012, working closely with current Rams Defensive Coordinator Tim Walton and Defensive Backs coach Marcus Robertson while assisting in organized team meetings and practice sessions.

He was a three-year letterwinner at cornerback at East Central, helping lead the Tigers to the Lone Star Conference North Division championship.

A native of Grand Prairie, Texas, Burks earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology in 2010, followed by his Masters in sports administration in 2011, both from ECU.
