The East Central University baseball team rebounded with an 11-4 victory at Texas Wesleyan in non-conference action.
The Tigers (3-7, 0-3 GAC) were led by juniors Luc Pomales and Nick Spini as a group of five ECU players with two-or-more hits in the game. Pomales tallied three hits, three RBIs and one run scored. Spini added two hits and three RBIs.
Senior Robert Buitrago earned his first win of the season on the mound in 7.2 innings of action. Buitrago allowed four runs and 10 hits, but struck out seven batters.
The Rams (5-5) were the first to get on the scoreboard, taking a 0-3 lead after the first inning on five of their 12 hits for the game.
Both teams held each other scoreless for the next five innings before ECU came alive in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs.
After the first out of the innings, senior Josh Lavender reached on an error by the pitcher and was joined on base when junior Garrett Donohoe singled. The next out was recorded before both runners advanced on a pass ball. That left both in scoring position for Pomales when he singled to center field. Junior David Terrazas put the runners on first and second when he was hit by a pitch.
Senior Ethan Gold then reached on a fielder’s choice that let all three runners safe due to an error. Junior Bryce McKee sent the final two runs of the innings home with a double to left center and a 5-3 lead.
The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-3. Junior Ariel Adut started things off by drawing a walk and was advanced to second on a single to center field by Lavender. Dohonoe moved both runners overs with a sacrifice bunt and Spini earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Pomales was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Terrazas earned the second RBI of the inning with a single to center field.
Texas Wesleyan added on run in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-4 Tiger lead.
ECU added four more runs in the top of the eighth for an 11-4 advantage. After the first out, junior Casey Chenoweth singled, junior Ty Huie doubled and Lavender was walked to load the bases. The second out of the inning was recorded, but that did not stop the Tigers. Spini hit a single to left field that scored two and then Lavender and Spini pulled off the double steal to put runners on second and third.
Pomales hit a single down the left side for another run and the bases were again loaded when Terrazas was hit by a pitch. That allowed Gold to earn an RBI when he drew a walk.
The Tiger defense held strong in the final two innings, not allowing a run and just two hits for the 11-4 final.
ECU will return home to face Henderson State, Feb. 21-22 at Tiger Field. A single game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21 starting at 2 p.m. and a double-header is on the slate for Saturday, Feb. 22 starting at noon.
