Thirteen members of the East Central University football team claimed 14 All-Great American Conference honors for the 2012 season. Five of the Tigers seniors have been named to the first team, four seniors earned second team honors and five players more were named honorable mentions.
Seniors Armonty Bryant (DE), Jason Catchings (OLB), Norris Wrenn (S), Fred Gaines (S), and Brian Gonzalez (P) were all named to the 30-member All-GAC First Team.
Seniors Titus Mobley (TB), Colter Huff (TE), Tobyn Large (OL) and Tyler McGrew (ILB) were all named to the 30-member All-GAC Second Team.
Seniors Erik Howell (DT), Amos Cherry (ILB), Dustin Lasell (OLB) and Gonzalez (K) and sophomore Qumain Black (CB) were all named honorable mention All-GAC.
Bryant ended his career with 27.5 sacks, good enough to claim the ECU Career Sacks title. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native recorded a total of 10.5 sacks, for 79 yards, his senior season, while adding 54 (27-27) tackles, 17.5 tackles-for-loss (115 yards), seven quarterbacks hurries, three pass break-ups, four forced fumbles, two blocked kicks, and two fumble recoveries (53 yards). Bryant scored one touchdown on a forced fumble and recovery that ended up being the game-winning TD against Southeastern Oklahoma State (Nov. 10).
Catchings finished the season with 56 (32-24) tackles, 13.5 tackles-for-loss (45 yards), five sacks (25 yards), one forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Wrenn claimed the Tigers Career Tackles record in his final game of the season, finishing his career with 278 tackles and breaking a record that had stood since 1978. In 2012, the Lawton, Okla., native tallied 72 (50-22) tackles, one interception, four pass break-ups, and a fumble recovery.
Gaines led ECU and the conference with seven interceptions, for 80 yards. The Fresno, Calif., native also added 63 (46-17) tackles and three break-ups in 2012.
Gonzalez, who was an All-GAC first team punter and an honorable mention kicker, went 14-of-20 on his field goals and 23-of-27 on his extra point attempts in 2012. The Los Angeles, Calif., native also averaged 40.3 yards on his punts and 61.3 on kickoffs. Gonzalez ended his career by hitting a career-long 50-yard field goal against Southeastern.
Mobley recorded eight touchdowns in 2012, six rushing and two receiving, and recorded 959 yards of total offense. Huff added two TD’s on 236 yards receiving. McGrew tallied 96 (45-51) tackles and threw one touchdown (four yards) on a fake field goal attempt. Large, an offensive lineman, finished the season with one tackle.
Cherry led the Tigers with 98 (51-47) tackles, including 6.5 for loss. Howell added 28 (13-15) tackles, while recovering two fumbles and forcing three. Lasell garnered 70 (38-32) tackles and recovered two fumbles for ECU. Black scored one defensive touchdown for the Tigers on a fumble recovery and tallied 51 (30-21) tackles.
