The East Central University softball team picked up two wins at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Great American Conference action. The Lady Tigers (23-20, 15-15 GAC) took a 5-2 win in game one and then won 9-0 in six innings in the second game of the day.
ECU had five players with multiple hits in the series, with three earning four hits. Sophomore Lead Tigert, senior Gina Mengwasser and sophomore Jordynn VanPelt all tallied four hits, with Mengwasser and VanPelt earning two RBIs.
Junior Samantha McGraw had a strong day at the plate as well, adding two home runs to her season total.
Junior Brianna Nunley earned a win in the second game, throwing a complete game and earning her fourth shutout of the season. Nunley allowed four hits and no runs, while striking out three.
Redshirt freshman Sydney Dow earned the win in the first game of the day, allowing six hits and two runs and striking out seven.
The teams will wrap up the series, Saturday, April 12 with a double-header starting at noon.
Game 1 – ECU 5, SWOSU 2
The Bulldogs (11-31, 7-23 GAC) were the first to get on the scoreboard in the opening game of the day, scoring a run in the third and fourth innings for a 0-2 advantage.
The Lady Tigers got going in the top of the fifth and scored five runs to earn the advantage. Junior Kaile Marcum led off with a single and was advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tigert earned the first RBI with a double to left field and was joined on base when Mengwasser singled. Dow loaded the bases by drawing a walk, which set up McGraw for a grand slam and four RBIs.
Both teams had runners on during the final two innings, but no more runs crossed the plate for the 5-2 ECU win.
Game 2 – ECU 9, SWOSU 0 (6 Innings)
The Lady Tigers kept the bats hot in the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. VanPelt started things with a single to third and stealing second. Sophomore Autumn Suydam was hit by a pitch and both runners were advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior Kayci Snider.
Junior Chelsea Patterson scored the first run with a second-straight sacrifice bunt and the second was scored when sophomore Lauren Reeves doubled.
ECU added four runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. Marcum led off by being hit by a pitch, but was thrown out when Tigert hit into a fielder’s choice. Mengwasser sent the first run home with a double to left center. McGraw singled up the middle to advance the runners to first and third. That allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. The final two runs scored when VanPelt tallied her team-leading ninth home run of the year.
The Lady Tigers added three more runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-0 lead. Marcum singled to left and stole second. Mengwasser sent the run home with a single and McGraw added the final two with her second home run of the day.
The Bulldogs got two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but could not get the runner past first which put the run rule into play forcing the end of the game an inning early.
