The East Central University softball team earned wins in both games of a doubleheader with Ouachita Baptist at Tiger Field. The Tigers (10-11, 6-3 GAC) first claimed 5-2 victory and then shutout Ouachita (7-11, 1-9 GAC) 4-0.
ECU was led by seniors Lauren Reeves and Autumn Suydam, who both hit .600 for the day. Reeves tallied three hits and three RBIs, while Suydam added four runs and three hits.
Senior Lacey Paulk took the win in game one, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out six. Senior Marissa Shaffer earned her second shutout of the season in game two, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out four.
The teams will wrap up the series, Sunday, March 5 with a doubleheader set to start at noon at Tiger Field.
East Central 5, Ouachita 2
The Tigers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Senior Taylor Davis led off the game with a home run to left center. Suydam followed with a double down the left line and scored when freshman Kasey Moore grounded out to short.
In the third inning, ECU added a run to its lead. After the first two outs Suydam was walked, stole second and ended up on third due to an error. That put her in scoring position when Reeves single to right.
The Tigers made it 5-0 in the fourth. After an out, senior Jordynn VanPelt drew a walk and was followed on base with a single from freshman Ellanee Allison. Both runners then stole the next base and VanPelt came home on a sacrifice fly from Paulk, who ended up on base due to an error. Sophomore Bre'Anna Davis added the second run with a sacrifice fly.
Ouachita kept fighting and put two runs up in the fifth on three hits for a 5-2 score.
Both teams then increased the defense for the rest of the game, with only the Tigers getting a single base runner in the remaining innings.
East Central 4, Ouachita 0
ECU again started the scoring in the first inning of the second game of the day. Taylor Davis was hit by a pitch and Suydam singled, with the runners ending up on second and third due to an error. Reeves earned the first RBI with a sacrifice fly and freshman Caitlin Paolini the second with a double down the leftfield line.
The game remained 2-0 until the fifth, when the Tigers got a run due to an error and a double from Reeves.
The final run of the game came in the sixth on a solo home run by VanPelt.
ECU's defense was strong all the way through the game, with just seven baserunners allowed for OBU.
