ECU Tennis Teams Picked Third and Fourth in the GAC Preseason Poll

The East Central University men’s tennis team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2013-14 Great American Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

The Tigers were tied for third with Harding, with four points each. Ouachita Baptist was picked to finish first (nine points/three first-place votes) and Southeastern Oklahoma State was second (seven points/one first-place vote).

ECU finished second at the 2013 GAC Championship after going in as the No. 3 seed. From that squad, the Tigers return six players and have added six for 2014. The returners include three seniors in Alec Bawcum, Andrew Cabato and Julian Caminos.

The Tigers also return 2013 GAC Men’s Tennis Newcomer of the Year, Max DeJuan and All-GAC First team pick Marc Fillat.

ECU will open the season Feb. 1-2 when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury (Feb. 1) and Washburn (Feb. 2).

Women’s Tennis Picked Fourth in GAC Preseason Poll

RUSSELLVILLE, ARK. – After claiming the 2013 Great American Conference tournament title, the East Central University women’s tennis team has been picked to finish fourth in the 2014 GAC Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

The Lady Tigers earned 26 points and one first-place vote in the poll, just six points behind preseason favorite Arkansas Tech (32 points/three first-place votes). Harding finished second (28/2), Southern Nazarene third (28/1), Southeastern Oklahoma State sixth (15), Ouachita Baptist sixth (10) and Henderson State seventh (8).
ECU finished the 2013 regular season tied for first at 5-1, with Arkansas Tech and Southern Nazarene, and earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

The Lady Tigers return eight from last year’s squad and have added two players to the mix after losing the 2013 All-GAC First Team selection Marta Valles to graduation.

Among the returns for ECU is junior Bernardita Muscillo, who was named to the 2013 All-GAC First Team. The Lady Tigers have three seniors in Agostina Moran, Virginie Rodriquez and Adisha Waghmarae.
