East Central University men's tennis junior Marc Fillat has earned a spot on the 12-member 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 7 Men's At-Large Team, as selected by CoSIDA. Fillat will now move on to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors.
The Vilassar de Mar, Spain, native has a 3.77 overall GPA in marketing at ECU and has helped the men's tennis team to three-straight runner-up finishes at the Great American Conference tennis tournaments. Fillat has been named to the 2012-13 and 2013-14 GAC All-Academic Teams and is a two-time (2013 & 2014) All-GAC First Team honoree.
Fillat finished the 2014 season with a 9-10 record at doubles with junior Max DeJuan, including a 2-1 mark against league opponents. The duo finished the season ranked No. 6 in the Central Region by the ITA in doubles. He also went 3-17 at No. 1 singles for the Tigers.
The 2014 Capital One Academic All-America first, second and third teams will be announced the first week of June.
To be considered for the academic honor a student-athlete must be a starter or significant contributor to their team during the season, have been at the school for more than one academic year and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Members of CoSIDA (Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America) vote on the ballots for district and All-America awards.
ECU has had three student-athletes earn Capital one Academic All-America accolades with Courtney Karner (Football) earning the first in 2003 on the second team, Emily Kennemer (Softball) in 2012 as the lone first team member and Ashley Cardwell (Women's At-Large - Golf) in 2013 as a second team member.
