Ex-Cowboys say scrutiny is same for modern players

Former members of the Dallas Cowboys say professional athletes today face the same scrutiny they faced more than a generation ago.

Roger Staubach, who won two Super Bowls, said Monday the vast majority of professional athletes do good but players in trouble overshadow them. Staubach and other ex-Cowboys were in Arkansas to honor former safety Cliff Harris at the Little Rock Touchdown Club. The group this year will give the Cliff Harris Award to the top defensive player in small-college football.

Cornerback Mel Renfro said players with good character can withstand scrutiny, and defensive back Charlie Waters said athletes are called on to be "well-behaved members of society."

The players said more should be said and written about those who play fair.
