Former OU coach Chuck Fairbanks dies

NORMAN, OK - Former University of Oklahoma head football coach Chuck Fiarbanks died Tuesday in Scottsdale, Ariz., after a long battle with brain cancer. Fairbanks was 79 years old.

Fairbanks coached at Oklahoma from 1967-72, where he went 52-15-1. He was the first OU coach to begin using the wishbone offense, which led to 3 Big 8 titles.

In 1973, Fairbanks left OU to become the coach of the New England Patriots, where he spent six seasons. The Patriots won two division titles under his tenure setting a club record of 46 wins.
