HUGO, OK - For years it seemed like the spotlight shined only on the boys basketball teams, but after the girls reached the state tournament for the second straight year, that spotlight better get big enough for two.
"It feels amazing, like it's a great feeling that you know were still competing for like a state championship," said senior guard Sarah Simpson.
The Lady Buffaloes captured their 3rd state trip on Saturday night and now aim to match their deepest run in school history from the 94' squad and reach the semifinals.
"We expect to make it farther than we did last year and we expect to be in the state championship on Saturday night," said Simpson.
These young ladies are booming with confidence. The Lady Buffaloes are a hard team to beat because there's not just one player you can key on.
One player could have a good game, and then that person gets shut done," said junior post Beautiful Brown. "But the beauty about our team is another person could have a good game."
The road to the ultimate goal of reaching Saturday is not for the faint of heart. Hugo opens up against Adair, a squad that lost to Sulphur in the semfiinals last year and will be looking to finish the job.
"It's about us," said head coach Chris Scott. "We've been preaching control what you can control. Our attitude is doing what were capable of doing every night. No matter who were playing, no matter what the competition is."
Hugo will play Adair at Southern Nazarene at 8:30 on Thursday.
