The East Central University men’s basketball team fell to Henderson State in Great American Conference action at the Duke Wells Center, 56-75.
The Tigers (11-7, 8-4 GAC) were led by senior Miles Mitchell, who tallied 13 points and two rebounds. Senior Chris Fisher added 11 points and five boards, while senior Colby Carr garnered 10 points and three assists.
The Reddies (9-11, 5-7 GAC) took an early six-point lead in the first five minutes, but ECU fought back with a 7-0 run to take a quick 11-10 advantage over the next three minutes. The teams battled for control for the next few minutes before a 6-0 Reddies run push the lead out to 13-20, with 8:17 left to play in the stanza.
HSU kept the pressure up for the next four minutes before a 14-4 run gave the Tigers a 33-31 lead with just seconds left in the half. The Reddies were able to get one more shot off and hit a three to take a 33-34 lead into the locker room.
ECU scored the first points of the second half, but HSU followed with a 9-0 run to take a 35-43 advantage. The Tigers kept fighting and cut the disadvantage to two (41-43), with 14:10 remaining. But it was not enough momentum to overcome, as the Reddies followed with an 11-2 run to take control for the game and earn the 56-75 win.
While both teams had strong overall shooting percentages (40.0 to 45.3), the Reddies earned a key advantage on shots from beyond the arc. The Tigers were 5-of-18 from three-point range, while HSU was 11-of-24.
The Tigers will look to rebound, Saturday, Feb. 1 when they face Ouachita Baptist at Bill Vining Arena at 4 p.m. in Arkadelphia, Ark.
