The Texas Rangers have recalled opening day catcher J.P. Arencibia from Triple-A Round Rock and may use him at first base.
As expected, Texas activated catcher Geovany Soto from the 60-day disabled list Thursday. The team also brought back Arencibia and designated first baseman Carlos Pena for assignment.
Soto tore cartilage in his right knee late in spring training and is looking to make his season debut Friday night in Toronto.
With Robinson Chirinos and Chris Jimenez already on the roster, the Rangers now have four catchers.
Arencibia played 48 games after being optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on May 20. He started 20 of those games at first base.
The Rangers traded right-handed reliever Jason Frasor on Wednesday.
