SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College softball team could not get its offense going in either half of its twin bill against visiting Centenary College on Saturday, falling by a score of 7-2 in both the first and second games to drop the ‘Roos to 9-16 overall and 2-12 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The ‘Roos and Ladies will play another doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
The ‘Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one when Hailey Clendennen plated Taylor Steelman with a sacrifice fly, but Centenary would score four in the top of the third to go on top 4-1, highlighted by a two run triple from Cadie Hancock. Austin College would get one back in the bottom half of the inning as Mallory Rossmann scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2, but the ladies would add another run in the sixth and two more came home on a single by Amber Smith in the seventh to make it a 7-2 final.
Victoria Herrera took the loss, surrendering four runs, three earned, on five hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Steelman paced the offence with a pair of hits, including a double, as the ‘Roos were limited to just four hits.
In game two, Centenary struck first with two runs in the top of the second before Austin College responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Emily Low came home on an error to make it 2-1. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth, when Centenary plated five runs to open a 7-1 lead. Abbie Woods plated two with a single in the inning.
Austin College would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Rossmann scored on an outfield error to make it 7-2, but the ‘Roos were shut down in the final two innings. Sophia Hernandez absorbed the loss, surrendering seven runs, only three earned, on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. Low went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Austin College offensively.
