SOSU Set to Open Exhibition Schedule at UTSA

Southeastern's men's basketball team will open a three-game Division I exhibition tour beginning on Oct. 31 when it heads south to San Antonio, Texas for a 7 p.m. matchup against Texas-San Antonio.

The Savage Storm come into the season picked third in the Great American Conference preseason poll on the heels of a 15-12 finish a season ago that saw SE earn the No. 4 seed in the GAC postseason tournament.

The selection is in spite of Southeastern seeing its top five scorers from a season ago depart, but is based on the excitement of the return of players who had their 2012-13 seasons cut short.

The first is Urald King who competed in just one contest a season ago, dropping 25 points in 27 minutes before deciding to spend the year on the sideline recovering from an injury. He was the number two scorer on the previous season's squad with 11.3 ppg and a team-best 7.4 rebounds per outing. As a sophomore was a first team All-Lone Star Conference North Division selection after averaging 12.6 ppg and 6.3 rpg.

The other is Travis Timmons who missed games in the second half of the GAC season after posting top-10 in the nation assist numbers through the first half of the season, including setting a Southeastern record for assists in a game with 16. He will open the year still sidelined, but the team will be looking for his return to bring with it the 7.6 ppg and the nearly seven assists per contest he averaged prior to his injury.

The Storm also return Quinton Threadgill who had a solid freshman campaign with 4.5 ppg and 2.3 assists per game.

Southeastern also returns a trio of players who spent a redshirt season on campus last season, including juniors Randy Peters and Daichi Taniguchi as well as freshmen Spencer Carroll.

SE also welcomes seven new players to the roster, including senior John Balwigaire who transfers in from Wright State for his senior season. He is joined by junior transfers Taylor Smaller, Darius Harris and Trevor Jackson, as well as freshmen Anton Cook, Andersen Fagundes and Tyler Lonzie.

This is the second-straight season the Storm will face Texas-San Antonio in an exhibition contest, falling in last season's matchup 71-43.

UTSA returns five letterwinners, including a pair of starters, from last year's team that went 10-22 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament with wins against San Jose State and top-seeded Louisiana Tech.

Southeastern will continue its D-I exhibition tour with a Nov. 2 matchup against Texas-El Paso at 8 p.m. in El Paso, Texas, followed by a Nov. 4 meeting with North Texas in Denton, Texas at 7:30 p.m.

The Storm open the season for real on Nov. 9 when they face Science and Arts (Okla.) at 7:30 p.m. in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
