Schaefer Leads Southeastern to Win Over SAU

Southeastern used a dominant second-half effort to power its way to a 67-51 victory over Southern Arkansas on Thursday night in Magnolia, Ark.

The win lifts the Savage Storm to 6-3 overall on the season and 3-0 in Great American Conference play heading into a Saturday afternoon matchup with Arkansas-Monticello at 2 p.m. in Monticello, Ark.

SE was powered by Haley Schaefer on the night who turned in an impressive double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds to lead all players in both categories.

Breana Small-Peppers turned in a 15 point outing on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, while Kaylie Baxter chipped in 10 points with a pair of threes.

The Storm shot just 37.0 percent for the game, but made up for the effort in two ways.

First, the second half SE posted a 44.0 percent effort while holding the Muleriders to 20.6 percent shooting.

Second SE capitalized on its free throw opportunities by hitting 23-of-35 at the charity stripe, while SAU was just 3-of-18 on free tries.

Schaefer's 17 boards led all rebounders while Baxter added nine and SE held a 50-to-47 edge on the glass as a team.

Taylor Richards dished out a team-best three assists and just missed double-digit points with nine.

The Storm trailed 34-30 at halftime, but responded out of the break and outscored the Muleriders 37-17 in the second half to pull away with the 67-51 victory.
