The Sherman coaching search is underway. The Bearcats held a public meeting at Sherman High School where the coaching search firm, Champions, explained their plan to find the next Bearcat football coach.
One of the details that came out of Thursday's meeting is the apparent willingness for Sherman to leave the athletic director and head coaching duties separated. For now, the Bearcats are searching for a head coach only, and not an athletic director. Former Sherman coach Tommy Hudspeth is currently serving as the interim athletic director.
The public was able to hear from the firm and Superintendent Al Hambrick on their vision for the position. The common theme was a coach that would put the student-athletes first regardless of a history of winning titles.
"We're not looking for someone that has won all these state championships," search firm director Bob Ledbetter said. "The primary thing we look at is, do these coaches truly care about these kids, do they know the game, and are they going to be prominent in the community."
The firm will look to reduce over 70 applicants down to four. They will then present those candidates to the Sherman ISD school board, and let the board go from there. The firm hopes to make that list available to board within the next two weeks.
