ADA – Two members of the East Central University softball team have been honored as picks to the 2013 Daktronics All-Central Region teams. Senior Shelby Simmons was a first-team pick as a short stop and junior Gina Mengwasser earned a spot on the second team as a catcher.
Simmons will now move with the rest of the first team members from all eight regions to the Daktronics All-America Team ballot.
Simmons was named the GAC Player of the Year after leading the league in batting average (.456), triples (6), and hits (73). The North Richland Hills, Texas, native also ranked No. 2 in on-base percentage (.485), third in total bases (101) and No. 5 in slugging percentage (.631) and RBIs (40). She has helped pace the Lady Tigers (42-13, 23-7 GAC) to a .353 team batting average, which ranks No. 3 in the NCAA.
Simmons ranks No. 5 in the nation in the Toughest to Strikeout category, which she earned the title in 2012. She also ranked No. 9 in triples and No. 19 in batting average in the NCAA.
Mengwasser, a 2013 All-GAC First Team pick, was fourth in the conference with a .390 batting average. The Edmond, Okla., native tallied 62 hits, including 12 home runs and is first in the GAC with her 53 RBIs.
Mengwasser ranks 41st in the NCAA in RBIs, 47th in home runs, and 68th in slugging percentage (.692).
