Softball Completes Sweep of Bulldogs

No. 5 Southeastern posted 21 hits over two games en route to completing a series sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State with wins of 6-1 and 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Softball Field.

The wins lift the Savage Storm to 32-7 overall on the season and 17-3 in Great American Conference play and the team will next be on the diamond April 12-13 when it hosts Ouachita Baptist in a four-game series.

The win is the fifth-straight for the club and the 11th in the last 12 games. SE has also pieced together an 11-game winning streak at home.

The Storm actually found itself in an early hole in the opener on Saturday with SWOSU jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

It would not take long, however, to answer as SE knotted the game at one in the bottom half on a Lauren Renneker double to left that scored a pinch-running Kaija Morris.

An inning later the Storm would break that tie when Whitney Hamilton connected on a three-run home run to left that also scored Courtney Riddle and Darrian Williams to make the score 4-1.

SE was not finished in the inning as two batters later Mindy McElroy would help her own cause with a solo home run to left.

The Storm pushed the lead to 6-1 in the fourth inning on a Laramie Beal single up the middle that scored a pinch-running Dakota Palmer from second.

That would hold to be the final in large part due to the effort of McElroy in the circle who recovered from allowing a run in the second to retire the final two batters of that inning and the next 11 after that before Kori Oord singled in the sixth inning.

She would get into a little trouble in the seventh after allowing a pair of hits, but she would coax the nine-hole hitter to ground to third base where Morris would snag the ball and step on the bag to retire the base runner from second and end the game.

McElroy tossed her fourth complete game of the year and allowed one run on six hits over those seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks to move to 13-2 on the season.

Offensively, Hamilton, McElroy and Renneker each posted two-hit outings in game one, while four others picked up hits.

Hamilton turned in three RBI, while Beal, McElroy and Renneker each added one.

The Bulldogs again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the finale as Oord homered to left center in the top of the first inning.

Again the Storm would answer when Courtney Moore singled on a hot shot to third base that scored Lacie Cook and tied the game at 1-1.

Beal would put SE in front in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run, her fourth of the season, to make the score 2-1.

Beal would drive in two more runs in the third inning on an RBI double that plated Moore and a pinch-running Kelsey Overacker and make the score 4-1.

Darrian Williams would drive in a run in the fourth inning on a groundout to second base that scored Cook and the Storm again pushed the lead out to 5-1.

After a scoreless fifth, the Courtney's teamed up to put more runs on the board, first when Riddle grounded out to short to score Rachel Jones and then one batter later when Moore doubled home Shayna Milam, setting the 7-1 final score.

Moore finished the contest 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Cook and Beal each added two hit outings, while Beal drove in three runs.

Four others collected hits in the game, with Williams and Riddle each adding an RBI.

Jacee Bennett turned in her fifth complete game of the season and scattered six hits over seven innings and allowing one run while striking out nine and walking one en route to her 18th win of the season.
