The East Central University softball team started the 2013 season and the St. Mary’s Tournament with a split. The Lady Tigers (1-1) fell in the opener to Angelo State, 6-4, and then rebounded with a 3-0 win over Tarleton State.
ECU was led by senior Shelby Simmons and sophomore Lacey Williams at the plate. Both recorded four hits, while Simmons has a .571 average and Williams has a .500 average after the first two games of the season.
“I’m really happy with our effort today,” said head coach Destini Anderson. “We had one bad inning against Angelo State that cost us the game, but rebounded well against Tarleton. Our pitchers threw well and we made good contact at the plate all day.”
Senior Ali Manship earned the win in the circle, with a complete game against Tarleton State. Manship allowed just five hits and zero runs, while striking out four batters.
ECU will return to the field tomorrow for two more games in the St. Mary’s Tournament. The Lady Tigers will face Texas Woman’s at 10 a.m. and Texas A&M Kingsville at noon. The final game of the tournament is against host St. Mary’s, Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m.
Game 2 vs. Tarleton State
The teams were in a defensive battle through the third inning before the Lady Tigers scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning.
Junior Gina Mengwasser started the inning off by being walked and was advanced to second on a single to third by Williams. Both players were advanced on a sacrifice but from sophomore Peyton Watson and Mengwasser came around to score when sophomore Kayci Snider reached on error.
The score remained 1-0, in favor of ECU until the sixth inning, when the Lady Tigers added two more runs.
Tigert and Snider each singled to start the inning and were put in scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by junior Taara Underhill. Simmons sent Tigert across the place with a single to the short stop. Manship loaded the bases when she was walked and Snider walked across the plate when Mengwasser was walked at the next at-bat for the final 3-0 score.
Game 1 vs. Angelo State
The Lady Tigers took an early lead in the game against Angelo State, recording a run in the top of the first inning. Simmons reached on an error and Manship put her in scoring position with a single to third base. Mengwasser earned the RBI with a double to right field that allowed Simmons to score.
ECU added another run in the third. Sophomore Chelsea Patterson started the inning off with a single to center field and scored when Simmons hit a triple to right center.
The Rambelles cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third, with their first run of the game.
The Lady Tigers scored a run in the fifth after Manship hit a single through the right side with two outs. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Mengwasser hit a single to right field to put ECU up 3-1.
The Lady Tigers added a fourth run in the six when Patterson sent Snider home on a single to left.
However, ASU waiting until the bottom of the sixth to find its offensive power and scored five runs on five walks to earn the 6-4 win.
