Softball Sweeps UAM on Friday

No. 5 Southeastern opened its four-game series with Arkansas-Monticello with a double-header sweep, taking game one 5-2 and game two 5-4 on Friday afternoon in Monticello, Ark.

The wins lift the Savage Storm to 23-6 overall on the season and 8-2 in Great American Conference play, heading into a Saturday twinbill set for a noon start to close out the series at UAM.

In the opener, SE used a four-run sixth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and power its way to the 5-2 win.

UAM opened with a run in the second and another in the fifth in what amounted to a pitcher's duel.

The Storm answered in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Cotton Blossom errors, the first allowing Paige Priest to score when Jessica Simmons reached on an error and the second tying the game when Lacie Cook laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Jacee Bennett to tie the game.

Darrian Williams would lay down a second squeeze bunt with two outs later in the inning to plate Cook and put SE in front 3-2.

That would extend to 4-2 one batter later when Courtney Moore drove in Williams on a single to center.

Whitney Hamilton would lead off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to fashion the final of 5-2.

The Storm put together just four hits, with Moore, Hamilton, Priest and Bennett splitting them up evenly.

Cook, Williams, Moore and Hamilton each collected an RBI.

Mindy McElroy got the start and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits before handing the ball to Bennett who threw the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts to collect the win.

The Storm decided to jump out in front first in the nightcap, doing so on a two-run homer by Cook in the third inning to break a scoreless tie.

Southeastern would push its edge to 5-0 in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run double by Williams and an RBI single by Moore.

UAM would answer, however, picking up a run each in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the gap to 5-2.

The Blossoms would add two more in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer, but Bennett, who has started but left the game in the sixth inning, would reenter strikeout the final hitter to preserve the win.

Bennett started the contest in the circle and tossed 5.1 innings to pick up her second win of the day and her 13th on the year after allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

McElroy tossed 1.2 innings in relief and allowed two runs on three hits with two K's.

Offensively, Simmons, Cook and Moore each posted two-hit outings, while Williams and Courtney Riddle each added one.

Cook and Williams also added two RBI each, while Moore posted one.
