Southeastern Tripped Up in Home Opener

Southeastern turned in a rough night shooting and was unable to dig out of an early hole in an 80-57 loss to No. 23 Northeastern State on Wednesday night in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The loss drops the Savage Storm to 0-2 on the season, while the RiverHawks improve to 2-1 on the year.

SE will be back in action Nov. 19 when it hosts Oklahoma Christian in a grudge match in Bloomer Sullivan Arena at 5:30 pm.

Southeastern struggled in the first half, hitting just 21.4 percent from the field, and despite a 40.6 percent second-half effort they were unable to surpass an NSU team that hit 48.4 percent for the entire game.

Bailey Welch led Southeastern with 11 points on the contest and was the only Storm player to reach double figures.

Emily Williams and Breana Small-Peppers each chipped in seven points, while Ronay English and Taylor Richards each added six.

Six different SE players each had a three on the game, with five of those coming in the second half.

Small-Peppers paced the squad on the glass with seven rebounds, while Haley Schaefer, Welch and Williams each pitched in five boards.

Richards dished out a team-high five assists, while Williams and Kayle Reaves each added a pair.

After an early 2-2 tie, the RiverHawks would reel off a 10-0 run to put the Storm in a hole before Welch would hit a three to stop the bleeding.

The teams would trade buckets over an extended stretch before a 21-1 run by NSU turned a nine-point deficit into a 19 point hole which was the difference at halftime when SE trailed 41-22.

The Storm was better from the field in the second half, but could not keep the RiverHawks from scoring.

NSU would lead by as many as 32 in the second half before SE would cut that deficit back to a final score of 80-57.
