Austin College baseball player Blaine Tew has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played from February 10 through February 16, the league office has announced.
Tew, a junior right hander from Denison, picked up his and the team’s first win of the season to close out a three game series with Schreiner, throwing 8.1 strong innings while allowing just one run on three hits. Tew took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and did not surrender a run until the ninth in a 5-1 victory.
Hernandez, Herrera Named SCAC Softball Players of the Week
Austin College softball players Sophia Hernandez and Victoria Herrera have been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played from February 10 through February 16.
Hernandez, a sophomore from Irving, had a huge weekend as the ‘Roos split a doubleheader with Huston-Tillotson. Hernandez batted .750 (6-for-10) with five RBI, five runs scored, a double, and two triples. In the team’s 12-8 game two victory, Hernandez went 4-for-5 with two triples and four RBI, and also pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save on the mound.
Herrera, a freshman from Houston, earned Pitcher of the Week honors after earning the victory over Huston-Tillotson while going 5.0 innings with eight runs and four strikeouts. She also tossed 3.2 innings in game one, surrendering just one run with two strikeouts, giving her six strikeouts in 8.2 total innings of work. Additionally, she went 3-for-5 in the second game with two RBI to help her own cause at the plate.
