The East Central University baseball team fell to Bacone College, 1-8, in non-conference action at Warrior Field.
The Tigers (5-14) saw multi-hit games from three players, with junior Michael Mariano leading the team with three hits and an RBI. Freshman Brandon Maggia and senior Justin Sutherland each added two hits.
Senior Hernan Vivas suffered the loss on the mound, pitching the first five innings, while allowing five hits and striking out three batters.
The Warriors were the first to get on the scoreboard, with a run in the bottom of the second.
ECU had a chance to score in the top of the third. Junior Brede Kochi started the inning with a bunt that was bobbled by the pitcher. Mariano was hit by a pitch and junior Justin Lavender walked to load the bases, with one out. However, junior Ethan Gold hit into a double play to end the inning.
Bacone added two runs in the bottom of the third with back-to-back home runs that were aided over the fence by a 25 mile per hour wind that was blowing straight out at center field.
The Warriors added four more runs, with a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth for a 0-7 lead
The Tigers scored a run in the top of the seventh. Senior Spencer Penrod started the inning with a single and was thrown out when Kochi reached on a fielder’s choice. Kochi stole second and was advanced to third when Gibson hit a ground ball to first for the second out. Mariano earned the RBI with a double to the left field fence, for a 1-7 score.
Bacone added another run in the bottom of the seventh for a 1-8 advantage.
The Tigers will remain on the road for the next six games and the next nine of 10, with the first three at Harding, March 8-9. The teams will first play a single game, Friday, March 8 starting at 2 p.m. and then battle through a double-header, Saturday, March 9 starting a 1 p.m.
