SOSU Volleyball Tied for Sixth in GAC Poll

Southeastern's volleyball team will open the 2014 season picked to finish tied for sixth in the Great American Conference according to the league's preseason poll released on Wednesday.

The Savage Storm posted a 13-18 record a season ago with a 7-7 mark in GAC play, but will be under the leadership of new head coach Brianna Barry who replaced the departing Jenn King.

Barry will have five returning starters to work with, including two-time All-GAC honoree Emily Gentle, as well as Megan Kunkel, Courtney Miller, Ariel Sanders and Madelynne Cera, each of whom averaged more than one kill per set last season.

SE opens the 2014 season at the Lady Reddie College Classic in Arkadelphia, Ark., facing Union and Fort Hays State on Sept. 5, followed by McMurray and Central Oklahoma on Sept. 6.

The Storm will open its home schedule on Sept. 9 against Southwestern Oklahoma State which will also serve as its GAC opener.

Southeastern was tied in the voting with Southern Arkansas, with each school receiving 48 points.

Arkansas tech was voted the favorite to win the league with 93 points and five of the 11 first place votes.

Harding was right behind with 89 points and four first place votes.

Southern Nazarene was third with 86 first place votes, while the remaining first place vote went to Ouachita Baptist who had 66 points and was picked fourth.

Southwestern Oklahoma State held the fifth spot, while East Central was behind SE in eighth.

Northwestern Oklahoma State, Arkansas-Monticello and Henderson State rounded out the poll.
