Women’s Basketball Falls at Southern Nazarene

The East Central University women’s basketball team dropped a tight 68-71 decision at Southern Nazarene in Great American Conference action at the Sawyer Center.

The Lady Tigers (16-8, 11-7 GAC) were led by senior Alycea Price, who tallied a career-best 22 points. Price went 8-of-8 from the charity stripe and 7-of-14 from the field, while adding five rebounds and three steals. Fellow seniors Ashley Robison and Alex Tucker each added 16 points.

The first half started with a 5-0 Crimson Storm (11-12, 8-9 GAC) run in the opening two minutes before ECU was able to get its first bucket to fall. ECU followed with a 9-3 run to take a short 9-8 lead, after the first five minutes of play. The teams traded baskets over the next 3:30 before SNU opened up a 15-point lead over the next five minutes.

The Crimson Storm held onto the lead for the rest of the half, but the Lady Tigers picked up their defense in the final 3:15. ECU held SNU without a field goal and closed the game to 28-36 heading into the intermission.

The Lady Tigers came out ready to fight in the second half and after trading points in the opening two minutes used a 16-4 run to tie the game at 46, with 10:15 left to play. The Crimson Storm followed with a quick 4-0 run and held onto a two to seven-point lead for the next five minutes. ECU then used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 61, with 3:45 left on the clock.

SNU followed with a 5-0 run, to take a 66-61 lead at the two-minute warning. The Lady Tigers followed with a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to one, but were unable to get any closer, as they fell 68-71.

The Crimson Storm earned the win on strong three-point shooting, going 9-of-15 for the game, while holding ECU to a 2-of-10 mark. ECU did a good job in the rebounding column, out-rebounding SNU 35-33, with a 13-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Lady Tigers will now have the weekend off before finishing the 2013-14 regular-season in the friendly confines of the Kerr Activities Center in the final week of GAC play. ECU will host arch rival Southeastern Oklahoma State, Thursday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. and Arkansas Tech, Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m.
