Dean ousted at Ada

ADA, OK -- It only took 13 minutes for the Ada School Board to decide to terminate the contracts of Head Football Coach Steve Dean, and assistants Gregory Dean and John Higbee.

Today's decision ends a month of speculation surrounding the future of the Cougar head coach. The specially called board meeting was short, to the point, and ended the way many expected.

"What they've done is set a precedent that if you don't like the coach, or your baby's not getting to play on the right side of the football, or your baby gets talked to in the wrong kind of manner by a coach, that you can go get ahold of a board member and the ball gets to rolling," Dean said.

Coach Dean was 30-18 during 4 seasons at his alma matter. His teams made 3 playoff appearances including a trip to the state Semi-finals in 2004. The Cougars were a disappointing 5-5 overall this past season, 4-3 in district and failed to make the playoffs.

"All I can simply say is that this is based on my reccomendation, based on what I think is best for our district at this point," said Pat Harrison, Ada Superintendent.

As the meeting adjourned, one of the spectators in attendance said, "Aren't you going to tell us why?"

There was no response, eventhough Coach Dean himself didn't know the answer to that question.

"You have parent complaints on one hand, wins and losses on the other hand, and [the Superintendent] says it's neither one of them. What's the concrete reason? It's politics. What we've turned into, is that we are just like any other small town in Oklahoma," Dean said.

Dean said that eventhough his termination only became official on Thursday, that he has already been approached by 2 Texas high schools about their head coaching jobs.

You guys have it as bad as we have it here. We have an average coach at best thats been here eight years and had about four great teams to win state and chokes! You all can have him if you want. We need a coach thats gonna come in and do what Ronnie Tipps did about 20 yrs ago. He set the bar high and every coach since then has failed to meet it! The next 2 years Ardmore's only going to be playing for 3rd or 4th place in the district. Here's Ardmore's 2008 schedule. Guthrie, Midwest City Carl Albert, Shawnee, Durant, Noble, Harrah, and Capitol Hill. Non-district schedule will be Ada, Duncan, and McAlester.

It is a sad day when we let politics take over our school board and let them oust someone like Coach Dean.

Couch Dean played football for Ada High, graduated from Ada High, and was a great addition to the Ada High staff. He really cared for the school and his players. Was a great role model. Very sad for Ada and Ada High.
